ABOUT THE THEME AND THE EVENT
The European Union (EU) is navigating an international environment marked by geopolitical instability, shifting alliances, and profound transformations in the international legal order.
Against this backdrop, the EU’s external action is evolving rapidly. Strategic autonomy, sanctions, trade, security and defence, international partnerships, enlargement, and constitutional reform are reshaping the legal and institutional framework within which the Union acts beyond its borders.
The publication of the third edition of EU External Relations Law: Text, Cases and Materials (Hart Publishing 2026) offers an opportunity to reflect on these developments and to consider the future direction of this dynamic field.
Edited by Ramses A. Wessel and Joris Larik, and featuring contributions from leading scholars, the volume brings together the latest developments in EU legislation, treaty-making, case law, and practice. It examines EU external relations from both constitutional and international law perspectives, covering key areas including trade, security and defence, the environment, the area of freedom, security and justice, and enlargement.
The book launch will convene scholars, practitioners, and policymakers for an afternoon of dialogue on how EU external relations law is responding to a changing geopolitical landscape – and how it may develop in the years ahead.
