We are pleased to announce that MPP is now accepting abstract submissions. We invite researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to submit contributions that advance rigorous research and offer innovative insights into migration policy and practice.
 

The 2020s are becoming a pivotal decade for international environmental human rights law. Almost every major international human rights body has recently pronounced on the relationship between human rights and climate change (or is due to do so shortly). At the same time, there has been a rapid growth in theorising about the philosophical foundations of environmental human rights. This theorising has informed the arguments of practitioners, shaped climate change advisory opinions, and been cited in judicial opinions. This conference will examine how recent developments in the legal practice should be understood at the level of theory.

The aims are: to support the publication of high-quality research outputs through critical discussion and informed peer review; to nurture interdisciplinary links across law, philosophy, and political science; to build a research network to advance theorising about environmental human rights; and to foster the learning and development of postgraduate researchers (PGRs) in this field.

There will be four themes:

1. The philosophical foundations of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment
2. Contested right-holders: future generations, peoples, and the ‘more-than-human’
3. Theorising the rights-turn in climate change litigation
4. The courts and democracy: legitimacy, institutional competence, and the separation of powers

On the final afternoon of the conference there will be a dedicated roundtable session designed to foreground the work and professional development of PGRs.  This session will provide a supportive, high-profile platform for PGRs to present and discuss their research in dialogue with established scholars participating in the conference.

Legal Design has evolved from a niche concept into a recognized discipline, yet demonstrating its impact on legal processes, rules, and institutions remains a substantially underdeveloped area of inquiry. The effects on legal research, practice, and education are, and should be, varied, requiring diversified methods and criteria of evaluation.

We invite researchers, legal practitioners, designers, and PhD candidates to submit their work for presentation and discussion during our interactive sessions. We are specifically looking for contributions that demonstrate how Legal Design is measured, tested, and implemented.

We welcome submissions on (but not limited to) the following topics:

• Empirical Studies in Legal Contexts: Contributions presenting and critically evaluating the application of legal design methods across different legal domains, from small-scale usability testing to large-scale empirical studies. 

• Methodological Innovations: Proposals of new frameworks for integrating design methods and thinking into legal research, education, or practice, including approaches to driving organizational and systemic change within institutions.

• Theoretical Foundations: Reflections on the disciplinary status of legal design and its relationship to established academic fields. Contributions may draw on the history of other emerging legal disciplines to examine how legal design might consolidate its own theoretical identity and scholarly legitimacy.

• Impact Systematization: Critical assessments of what is currently known about the impact of legal design interventions, alongside identification of gaps that warrant further investigation. Submissions are encouraged to engage with the question of what counts as evidence of impact and under what conditions it can be meaningfully measured.

The Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL) of the University of Luxembourg will hold an international conference on the theme “Is EU Law Fit for Purpose?”. The conference will take place on 9–10 October 2026 at the Chambre de Commerce, Luxembourg, and is organised with the generous support of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR). The LCEL is pleased to invite early-career researchers to submit papers for presentation.

European Union law has become the most significant driver of legal change across the Member States, shaping virtually all areas of public and private regulation. In recent years, its scope and intensity have expanded markedly as the Union has been called upon to respond to successive crises and emerging challenges, including financial instability, migration, threats to the rule of law, technological transformation, climate change, and geopolitical insecurity. The conference addresses two interrelated questions: first, whether EU law adequately covers the areas in which collective European action is necessary; and secondly, whether existing EU legal frameworks achieve their stated objectives and how they might be improved. The conference will also address more theoretical questions on the concept of effectiveness of law, how it can be defined and how it can be measured.

The conference brings together leading scholars, senior judges of the Court of Justice and the General Court of the European Union, Advocates General, representatives of EU institutions, policymakers, and practitioners. Each thematic session will include a presentation by a selected early-career researcher, contributing an original scholarly perspective alongside the session’s established speakers.

The call is addressed to PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers working on European Union law or a closely related field. Applicants from all countries are welcome.

The University of Liverpool is organising a two-days conference on “International cooperation under the European Convention on Human Rights” (Liverpool, 15-16 October 2026). The conference relies on a dialogue of scholars and practicing experts from the European Court of Human Rights (the Court) and the Council of Europe. The call for papers is open to interested scholars (PhD candidates, postdoctoral and established scholars). Papers might cover any aspect of the conference topic, such as Convention rights in the fields of climate change, refugee and immigration control, criminal cooperation, membership in the EU or other international organisations, procedural duties to cooperate with the Court in pending procedures or enforcement of judgments. This call for papers is particularly interested in research which considers concerns such as the following: what are the challenges for researching online hate crimes; does online hate directly correlate to offline/real-world harm, and if so, where does responsibility lie; are current regulations sufficient and enforceable; what can be done to address increasingly inflammatory language which can be a catalyst to abuse, and should we consider amendments to freedom of expression?

We welcome papers that consider the following:

The impact of global conflicts, crimes, and ethno-violence on online hate speech.

Legal and policy attempts to restrict, mitigate, and/or monitor online platforms and media sites, and their levels of success.

Negotiating the boundaries of freedom of speech and policing online hate. I

ntersectionalities of online hate speech and hate crimes, for example, in relation to violence against women.

This Special Issue will bring together researchers and academics both within and beyond the field of hate studies to highlight the challenges to online safety and the harms of hate.

The Life’s Work of László Krasznahorkai from a “Legal and Literary” Perspective – Call for Papers

For several decades now, Krasznahorkai’s life’s work has been the subject of a lively and multifaceted scholarly discourse, not only within literary studies in the narrow sense but also in related academic fields. While, for example, scholarly interest in the author’s work is clearly evident from the perspectives of philosophy or theology, the interpretive possibilities offered by the interdisciplinary field of “law and literature” have received relatively little attention to date.

For the volume of studies announced in the attached Call for Papers, the editors are seeking contributions that approach Krasznahorkai’s works from a “law and literature” perspective. The aim of the volume is to contribute to the growing international scholarly discourse surrounding his oeuvre, bringing to the fore the legal and normative dimensions of his works—dimensions that are often overshadowed by literary and aesthetic approaches.

A bizalmat nem lehet pusztán egy új alkotmánnyal helyreállítani – Elindult a tanszéki oktatók esszésorozata a Qubiton

Az alkotmányosság helyreállítása és az alkotmányos rendszer megerősítése nagyszabású társadalmi és politikai feladat. Miközben a gyakorlati kérdések (kit, hogy lehet elmozdítani, mihez milyen többség kell, stb.) sürgetők lehetnek, átfogó és világos gondolkodási keret nélkül az ezekre adott válaszok könnyen esetlegesek, ellentmondásosak vagy rövidlátók maradhatnak. Ez az írás az ELTE Alkotmányjogi Tanszék oktatóinak esszésorozatát nyitja meg. Az esszésorozat célja, hogy áthatóvá és megvitathatóvá tegye ezt a gondolkodási keretet. Csak így dönthető el felelősen, hogy egyáltalán milyen kérdéseket érdemes feltenni, milyen szempontokat kell mérlegelni, és hogyan függnek össze egymással az egyes döntések. Szeretnénk megmutatni, hogy az alkotmányosság nem csupán közjogi technika, és nem is csak alkotmányjogi kérdés. Nem elég jó jogszabályszövegeket írni vagy jó intézményi megoldásokat kitalálni. Számít a demokratikus nyilvánosság, a társadalmi részvétel, a bizalom, és az is, hogy az emberek mennyire érzik a sajátjuknak az alkotmányos rendet. Az alkotmányosság csak ezekkel együtt válhat tartóssá. Közös alapunk az európai alkotmányos hagyomány, a jogállamiság és a plurális demokrácia tisztelete. Fontosnak tartjuk ugyanakkor azt is, hogy e közös alapok mellett helye van a szakmai vitának. Az írások ezért közös értékekből indulnak ki, de eltérő, akár egymással versengő álláspontokat is megjeleníthetnek.

Fenntartható mesterséges intelligencia használat a jogi munka során

Az eseménysorozat ötödik rendezvényének témája az Algoritmikus Alkotmányosság Lendület Kutatócsoport keretében készülő ConstAI adatbázis bemutatása.

A ConstAI adatbázis olyan normatív jogszabályokat, soft law eszközöket és bírósági esetjogot gyűjt a világ minden részéből, amelyek a mesterséges intelligencia hatását érintik a szólásszabadságra, a tisztességes eljáráshoz való jogra, valamint az egészséges környezethez való jogra. Az első szekció előadásaiban bemutatjuk a gyűjtés és a rendszerezés módszertanát, az első kézzelfogható eredményeket, valamint a munka folytatásától hosszabb távon várható hozzáadott értéket, külön kitérve az egyes részterületek sajátosságaira.

Militant Rule of Law. Legal Imperfection and What to Do About It (Cambridge University Press 2026)

A HTK Irodalomtudományi Kutatóintézet, a Miskolci Egyetem Állam- és Jogtudományi Kar, valamint az Országos Kriminológiai Intézet 2026. június 26-án 10:00 órától Irodalomtudomány és kriminológia címmel tudományos konferenciát rendez.

A konferencia célja az interdiszciplináris párbeszéd kialakítása kriminológusok, jogászok, irodalmárok, rendészeti és kriminalisztikai szakemberek, valamint társadalomtudósok között a jogi jelenségek kulturális, narratív és retorikai dimenzióinak középpontba állításával a kriminológia és az irodalomtudomány metszéspontján.
