Call for Papers - How can restorative justice provide a framework for thinking about heritage, care, and access - both today and in the future?

How can practices of care advance justice in museums and beyond? And how can museums, archives, universities, and other sites of heritage contribute to more just futures?

The Global Conservation: Histories and Theories (GloCo) project at the University of Vienna invites contributions to the international conference Restorative Justice. Heritage Practices, Narratives, and Futures of Conservation, taking place in Vienna in October 2027.

The conference brings together scholars, practitioners, researchers, artists, and community members to examine how practices of preservation, care, and conservation intersect with questions of justice, power, memory, and repair. Contributions are invited that engage with the plurality of perspectives, methods, and experiences shaping heritage practices and the futures they help create.

The Call for Papers welcomes proposals addressing three core themes:

  • Justice in storage, conservation labs, and beyond – care, labour, responsibility, participation, and unequal power relations in heritage practices.

  • Words, histories, and epistemologies – situated histories of care and conservation, terminology, local epistemologies, and hierarchies within museums and other institutions.

  • Memory, archives, and erasure – community and counter-archives, oral and intergenerational histories, language, memory, and the power relations shaping what is preserved and remembered.

We invite proposals of up to 300 words accompanied by a short biography.

Call for Papers - Exchange and Analysis on Democracy and the Rule of Law in Europe

The next edition of the European Rule of Law Conference organised by re:constitution -  Exchange and Analysis on Democracy and the Rule of Law in Europe will take place on 11 and 12 May 2027 in Brussels. The conference will bring together protagonists of the rule of law in Europe and beyond, including policymakers and legal practitioners, leading academic experts, the judiciary, civil society and journalists, actors from culture, business and other fields whose perspectives can contribute to a broader understanding of the rule of law.

The conference will provide a space to take stock of where the rule of law stands in the EU and wider Europe, to examine the challenges it faces and to explore how its protection, resilience and further development can be shaped. Europe and its democratic and constitutional orders are undergoing profound political, social and geopolitical change. Long-held assumptions about the authority of law, democratic institutions and the relationship between legal frameworks and political power are increasingly contested. Democratic regression, populism, polarisation, disinformation, geopolitical pressures and security challenges have exposed vulnerabilities in the rule of law architecture, while also generating new forms of resistance, adaptation and institutional renewal.

The conference aims to strengthen a robust, impact-oriented, vibrant, critical and interdisciplinary community around the rule of law in Europe and beyond. It seeks to create genuinely controversial, open and substantive debates, bringing together different, and where appropriate opposing, political and intellectual perspectives. Therefore, it aims at bringing together different forms of expertise, critical voices from across the political and intellectual spectrum and people and communities that do not usually meet in conventional rule of law debates.

We warmly invite submissions of proposals for parallel sessions linked to the five thematic clusters.

Call for Papers - Cultural Heritage, Crime and Justice: Safeguarding Global Commons in International and EU Perspective

The broad notion of cultural heritage constitutes a foundational cornerstone within both international and European Union legal systems as a vital global common. This conference will examine how contemporary legal frameworks, law enforcement practices, and judicial developments — at both European and global levels — can be harnessed to combat property crime, to prevent illicit trafficking, and to counter the destruction of shared heritage. By focusing on the role of national and supranational courts, the overall administration of justice, and judicial cooperation, the event aims at facilitating a critical and interdisciplinary dialogue on how legal harmonization can more effectively safeguard tangible and intangible assets as part of the common heritage of mankind.

We invite contributions that explore the following themes from the perspective of tangible, intangible, and global commons, including, but not limited to:

  • Cultural Heritage, Armed Conflicts, and Global Security
  • Crimes Against Cultural Heritage and Regimes of Liability: Individuals, Corporations, and States
  • The Administration of Justice, Courts, and Judicial Cooperation
  • Criminal Justice, Intelligence, and Law Enforcement Security
  • Digital Frontiers, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybercrime
  • Global Emergencies, Risk Management, and Infrastructure Security
  • Cultural Heritage and Human Rights

Call for Papers – Louvain Law Review

The Louvain Law Review is preparing a special issue on figures, characters, and imaginaries in/of law.

Who are the “fit and proper person” constructed by law? How does law represent the “black boxes” of algorithmic governance? How does the image of a hierarchy or pyramid of norms structure legal reasoning? And how can we think about hybrid human/non-human figures or other representations of worlds in law?

Call for Papers - Law, Space and Borders

Borders are among the most revealing sites of the law–space tangle. Walls and fences, camps and hotspots, airports and ports, corridors and checkpoints, offshore infrastructures and digital databases: across all these spaces, borders are not simply lines on a map but ongoing processes of bordering — produced, enforced, and contested through legal practices, technologies, narratives, and geopolitical imaginaries. They operate as laboratories where sovereignty, security, mobility, citizenship, human rights, and jurisdiction are continuously negotiated and redefined.

The Palermo workshop aims to consolidate the growing Critical Legal Geographies network through a focused discussion on borders, borderscapes, and the legal production of border spaces. It investigates how law operates spatially at, along, and far beyond the border line – from the externalisation of migration control to the internal borders that run through cities, workplaces, and everyday life – and, just as centrally, how borders are resisted. Attention will be devoted to forms of solidarity and alternative legal-spatial imaginaries emerging in and around border spaces, and to the lived spatialities and everyday materialities of border regimes, beyond their treatment as abstract geopolitical constructs.

We welcome contributions from geography, law, sociology, criminology, political science, migration studies, urban studies, and related fields from scholars at all career stages as well as practitioners, activists, and civil-society actors.

Precedent in Practice: Comparative Experiences and Challenges

ELTE Faculty of Law invites proposals for a conference on the role of judicial precedent in legal systems traditionally based on codified law. Taking Hungary’s limited precedent system as a starting point, the conference will explore the authority of judicial decisions, the relationship between precedent and legislation, and how courts can maintain consistency while allowing the law to develop. Comparative perspectives are especially welcome.

The conference will feature presentations by Rodrigo Becker (Rio de Janeiro State University), Thomas Adams (University of Oxford), and Hafsteinn Dan Kristjánsson (Reykjavík University).

We invite abstracts of no more than 250 words for proposed presentations. Please email your abstract to gardos.peter@ajk.elte.hu by 15 November 2026. Applicants will be notified of the university’s decision by 15 December 2026. The conference will be held on 15 February 2027. We warmly welcome speakers from outside Hungary. Unfortunately, we are unable to cover travel or accommodation costs.

A jogban – különösen a globális kapitalizmus következtében – megtalálhatók olyan autoriter jellemvonások, amelyekre támaszkodva az autoriter politikai vezetők létrehozzák saját autoriter jogrendszerüket.

Dr. Munk jogi tanulmányait az Aarhusi és a Manchesteri Egyetemen végezte, több akadémiai kötet szerzője, köztük a New Forms of Civic Resistance and Activism (2026), a Victimisation in the Digital Age (2025), és a Memetic War: Online Resistance in Ukraine (2024) című köteteké. Ez utóbbi a The Complex Web in Memetic Warfare című kutatásának eredményeit mutatja be.

Az ELTE ÁJK Kriminológiai Tanszéke és a Magyar Kriminológiai Társaság közös szervezésében megvalósuló, angol nyelvű szakmai szimpózium fókuszában a humorra épülő, memetikus háborús propaganda, a modern online dezinformáció és a digitális térben formálódó ifjúsági kultúrák állnak. Dr. Tine Munk Political Memes: From Youth Margins to the Mainstream című nyitóelőadásában azt mutatja be, hogyan terjedtek el a politikai mémek az anonim online szubkultúráktól a mindennapi politikai kommunikációig.

A részvétel ingyenes. Részvételi szándékát kérjük, jelezze a krimtitkarsag@ajk.elte.hu címen, „Nemzetközi szimpózium” tárgyú e-mailben.

Book launch - EU External Relations Law: Text, Cases and Materials (Hart Publishing 2026)

The European Union (EU) is navigating an international environment marked by geopolitical instability, shifting alliances, and profound transformations in the international legal order.

Against this backdrop, the EU’s external action is evolving rapidly. Strategic autonomy, sanctions, trade, security and defence, international partnerships, enlargement, and constitutional reform are reshaping the legal and institutional framework within which the Union acts beyond its borders.

The publication of the third edition of EU External Relations Law: Text, Cases and Materials (Hart Publishing 2026) offers an opportunity to reflect on these developments and to consider the future direction of this dynamic field.

Edited by Ramses A. Wessel and Joris Larik, and featuring contributions from leading scholars, the volume brings together the latest developments in EU legislation, treaty-making, case law, and practice. It examines EU external relations from both constitutional and international law perspectives, covering key areas including trade, security and defence, the environment, the area of freedom, security and justice, and enlargement.

The book launch will convene scholars, practitioners, and policymakers for an afternoon of dialogue on how EU external relations law is responding to a changing geopolitical landscape – and how it may develop in the years ahead.
